The Power and Use of Boruto's Jougan Eyes
When the Boruto manga first debuted, most readers noticed one thing and that was the change in his eyes. It's been almost four years since the manga debuted, and now we have a lot of theories about Boruto's abilities.

What are the eyes of Jougan Baruto?
Jougan is a Dojutsu (eye technique) that Boruto has, it can also be translated as "Pure Eyes". It is a form of Kekkei Genkai and comes from the Otsutsuki clan. Its abilities are known only to the Otsutsuki clan, whose members claim that the eye is inherited.
In the manga, these eyes are shown with pupils that are barely visible. Whereas, in the anime, Jougan is blue with dark sclera and visible pupils. We know that Boruto has this eye and is not yet fully mastered, so fans will still have to be patient to discover the full potential of this eye.
The Origin of Boruto's Jougan Eyes?
Jougan is a type of Dojutsu, but differs from other Dojutsu in that it has no natural progression. Example: Sharingan evolves into Rinnegan. The Byakugan evolves to form the Tenseigan. However, Jougan is a stand-alone ability. But just like the others, its origin lies with the Otsutsuki clan.
Here are 3 Theories that may be the origin of Jougan:
- Genetic Theory – Kaguya Otsutsuki shares her powers with her two sons, Hagoromo and Hamura. Hagoromo, Naruto's ancestor, gave him the ability of Sage of Six Paths, receiving the Rinnegan. Meanwhile Hamura, Hinata's ancestor, received the Tenseigan. Thus, Boruto is related by blood to Kaguya from both sides of his family and therefore he has the genetics for jougan.
- Toneri Otsusuki– In The Last: Naruto, we are introduced to Toneri, who kidnaps Hinata and performs some unexplained experiments to alter her DNA. Some of Fan's theories suggest that maybe this has something to do with Boruto's Jougan abilities.
- Momoshiki Theory – In his final battle, we see Momoshiki make a terrible prophecy, “Those blue eyes of yours will take everything from you.” Some fans believe that here, he is talking about Jougan. Even the members of the Otsutsuki clan said that they found the ability troublesome.
What is the Power of Boruto's Jougan Eyes?
We still haven't seen all of Jougan's abilities. However, from what has been shown, it can be said that Jougan is able to see Chakra flow, much like the Sharingan's ability. And can also see the Chakra pathway system, such as the Byakugan.
Since Chakra plays an important role in this series, Boruto will probably use this ability to gather information in combat, specifically for defense and even in attack.
Like Naruto, even Boruto can sense negative energy thanks to his Jougan. He could see through the invisible barrier that connected the two dimensions. The first is the physical realm where the main story takes place, and the second is the connecting dimension that comes after the first.
Jougan also allows him to predict the location of the portal used by members of the Otsutsuki clan (called Yomotsu Hirasaka). An animator from the show revealed that the Jougan is stronger than the Byakugan and even than the Tensegan.
What Are the Uses of Boruto's Jougan Eyes?
While this eye of Boruto is still in progress, we know that it is connected to the dimension that the Kage clan uses. Boruto couldn't activate it on the initial command. On the contrary, when he focused on an object or person, it would activate unconsciously.
We've seen that Boruto can travel between dimensions, but he doesn't realize what he's doing and just thinks it's just a coincidence. Currently, the only ninja who can freely move between dimensions is Sasuke.
However while doing so, he lost a large amount of Chakra, and his Sharingan was deactivated for a long time. I believe that Boruto will be an important part in helping Naruto and Sasuke travel to another dimension without draining Sasuke's energy. Of course after he had full control of those eyes.
In closing, in the anime the power of Boruto's eyes has not been officially called Jougan. But an animator on the series, Chengxi Huang, posted a picture of Boruto on his blog, along with the name Jougan. He also said that Ikemoto and Kishimoto had not thought fully about this concept.
